This evening we had the pleasure of hosting one of California’s best raw food chefs. Ocean has been eating and cooking raw for over 8 years. He has studied with some of the best and brightest talent in the raw food world, and took the time to teach us how to make a mexican meal, fully raw! The results were delicious. Everyone enjoyed the interactive presentation, as well as the test at the end! Many thanks to Ocean for taking the time to do this for us. Students from Pitt, CMU, and Carlow all took part in this health masterpiece. Why raw food? Simple: 1. Less energy waste 2. Less toxins 3. Less money 4. High Energy! It is better for your body because the enzymes in the food are not destroyed by heat. Plus no energy is wasted in cooking it, so it protects the environment. And best of all it fills you with vigor and life. Try it today! Check out this video of Ocean showing us how to make the Mexican Chocolate Drink, and this one of him showing how to make raw takos, or this one of him showing raw sour kreem. Here are the recipes and some photos from the class:

OK everyone, I know it has been a while. But as they say, good things come to those who wait. Take a look what we have been cooking up for this fall:

New Headquarters grand opening: We are finally ready to ‘officially’ unveil our new headquarters in Pittsburgh. Though we have been operating there for some time, it has taken some time and energy to get everything together. Stay tuned for dates and times.

Seva vegan and vegetarian food service: In line with our fundamental philosophy, we are about to start offering gourmet vegan and vegetarian food from a vending truck in downtown Oakland. Check out the menu.

…but our one-horse open sleigh is more likely a Corolla or Civic, and instead of being filled with plastic toys, it’s filled with locally grown, organic goodies that will really warm up the heart.

As the holiday season hits its stride, we here at Food For Life Experience are gracious and grateful as look back on our busy, busy times so far, in our humble efforts to spread some good ol’ healthy cheer.

The students at University of Pittsburgh and Ohio University certainly find their stomachs, hearts, and souls treated in a much more kinder, joyous, and enlightened way than usual with our vegan and vegetarian campus cooking programs.

We’ve been at it for six years now and counting, so we know a good groove when we find it, and this year has been no exception so far.

At Ohio University, the Vegan Cooking Workshop continues as our pioneer program, attracting 75-100 students and community members each week (and even around 200 people for our recent Thanksgiving feast). Combined with our Friday Vegan Starving Artists Lunch at the OU Art School, our reputation for providing wholesome, fresh, and succulent meals guaranteed to raise your consciousness continues unabated.

And now we are going in full force at the University of Pittsburgh. Our Pittsburgh center has become a vibrant local source of yoga, meditation, and of course….food that (as our good friend Prashant would say) is awesome!

This fall semester has seen our efforts fructify and multiply in so many inspiring ways. Each week we top our yoga and meditation programs with a freshly-cooked, expertly spiced vegan free feast offering to our friends and family here in Pittsburgh.

We’ve also been fortunate to cater some very cool events for our friends with the local student group Save The Planet. After all, the most practical thing one can do nowadays to be environmentally sound is to go vegan/vegetarian, and after one bite of our sweets and savories, there may be no going back!

And most recently, we have started our Simple Lunch program. Straight from our kitchen into your hands and bellies, we offer fresh and simple lunch options to the Pittsburgh community. It’s fast food…but with real benefit to body, mind, and soul. We look forwards to becoming the hot, hip new lunchtime alternative as we roll into 2009.

It’s all so exciting that I can’t stop writing about it….but I must! Until next time! Stay tuned to our FFLX blog for all the latest and please give us your support. We’re nothing without your kindness and generosity.

We will need a few things to make it fully useful, like a new fridge, gas stove, and a few other random things. If anyone could help with any of these things it would be greatly appreciated.

Slow and steady wins the race. We have all heard it before, but these days it is even more relevant-especially when driving. See, the aerodynamic drag of an object traveling through a viscous substance increases exponentially with the square of the velocity. Thus the rate of consumption of energy increases drastically with increasing speed.

Simply put, going 75 uses a lot more gas then going 60. And for most trips the amount of time saved by going 10 or 15 mph faster is not worth it. dont worry if everyone passes you. you will get the last laugh when you pass them while they spend the 10 minutes they saved at the gas station filling up more $5/gal gas!

All summer we have been working out of a makeshift 2 bedroom apartment. Not the most ideal, but the best we could do. The lease goes up on August 1, so we are hoping to find a more suitable operational headquarters. Conditions: 1. Close to campus 2. not too expensive 3. Nice kitchen 4. hardwood floors (stay cleaner) 5. 2 bathrooms.

Of course we dont expect to meet all criteria, but at least as many as possible. As of now there are a total of 4 volunteers who have signed up to work out of the center full time. So if anyone can help us find/support a place, please let us know!
